From the Classroom to the Courtroom: How VCU is Training the Next Generation of Forensic Scientists with ScenePD

At VCU, students aren’t just learning forensic science—they’re practicing it. With ScenePD, they transform real-world crime scene scenarios into precise, to-scale diagrams, building the skills and confidence needed to present evidence clearly in the courtroom.

In public safety and forensic science, the gap between classroom theory and real-world application can be steep. Out in the field, investigators don't have the luxury of perfectly sterile environments. They deal with complex crime scenes, tight timelines, and the heavy burden of knowing that every measurement and piece of evidence will eventually face the scrutiny of a jury.

At Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Professor Stephen Stockman knows exactly what it takes to survive on the stand. With years of real-world field experience, he understands that a rough, hand-drawn sketch won’t cut it when a case goes to trial. That’s why his forensic science classes rely on ScenePD (the industry-standard diagramming solution from SmartSafety Software) to prepare students for the harsh realities of the job.

Ditching the Outdated Tech

Before ScenePD, students and professionals alike often had to rely on generic flowchart software like Visio to map out crime scenes. The result? Wasted time and confusing diagrams.

"With Visio, I was coming up with weird shapes and having to do a whole other legend just to indicate what kind of evidence I had," explains Maggi Spratlin, a VCU Forensic Science Master's Student focusing on Physical Analysis.

In Stockman’s class, students are thrown into realistic scenarios. They process mock indoor and outdoor crime scenes; complete with bodies, footwear impressions, scattered cartridge cases, and blood spatter. They take their raw field notes and measurements and use ScenePD to translate them into precise, to-scale digital diagrams.

"ScenePD is really user-friendly and easy to navigate," notes Sarina Regis, TA in Strockman’s class. "Finding our overall measurements, the furniture, the windows, and the doors wasn't difficult at all. I found it actually fun going through and seeing how much [mock evidence] you had available in the library."

With over 1,300 digital symbols built specifically for public safety, ScenePD allows students to drop in accurate representations of weapons, vehicles, and environmental details with just a few clicks. No more building "weird shapes" to represent a firearm.

Building Courtroom Credibility

For Professor Stockman, the ultimate test of a diagram isn't just accuracy; it's how it holds up in court. As part of their final project, VCU students are required to present their findings just as they would on the witness stand.

"The whole essence of sketching is court presentation," Stockman says. "You go in with a rough sketch, and it looks like kids drew it. But then you have that awesome scale diagram, and all of a sudden you're a super professional. The jury chimes in, they listen, and they pay attention."

Bridging the Gap Between the Field and the Lab

Even for students like Regis, whose career path leans more toward the physical analysis of evidence in a lab, understanding the diagramming process is critical.

"It starts at the crime scene," Regis explains. "The way they collect their evidence and send it to the lab plays a big part in how our analysis goes. Getting insight into the processes that CSI goes through... I think I'm becoming an overall better forensic scientist by learning the setup and how to prepare for these things."

By integrating ScenePD into their curriculum, VCU isn't just teaching students how to use a software platform. They are teaching them how to communicate effectively, protect the chain of custody, and present rock-solid evidence that can withstand the pressure of the courtroom.
