In late 2007, Greg Prosch received nine months' notice that he was being laid off from Micron. His wife, a youth pastor at the time, mentioned the news to her youth group.

One of the students spoke up: his uncle, Steve Carlson, ran a software company that might be hiring. Greg sent over his resume, completed a few interviews, and officially joined SmartSafety in 2008.

Three Acquisitions and the AI Transition

Over the course of 18 years, a company will inevitably change. SmartSafety has been bought and sold three times during Greg’s tenure.

Corporate acquisitions can often destroy company culture, introducing new politics and high turnover. SmartSafety avoided that outcome. The core team remained intact, and the internal culture endured through every transition.

From a technical standpoint, Greg notes that the most significant shift in his career has been the recent transition into Artificial Intelligence. Integrating AI into incident diagramming requires a fundamental shift in how software is built and deployed.

Despite the learning curve, Greg sees this as the exact reason SmartSafety will continue to dominate the market.

"I think we produce the best incident diagramming solution on the market, and it is only going to get better," Greg said. "I am excited at how pleased our customers will be with our upcoming releases. I don’t wish our competitors any ill will, but I sure wouldn’t want to be in their shoes."

The True Measure of a Company

When asked what makes SmartSafety different from other employers, Greg does not point to the software, the benefits, or the acquisitions. He points to how the company treats its people when things go wrong.

Over the years, Greg has watched colleagues go through incredibly difficult personal seasons—situations so severe that they inevitably impacted the employees' work life.

"Instead of getting rid of them, we supported them and helped them through those challenges," Greg said. "Now that’s a company worth working for."

This month, he and his wife celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary. Together, they have one child and three grandchildren.
